When Lettuce Turns on You, Trust Little Debbie

Every now and then the news serves up a story so strange you have to sit down on the porch and let your brain catch up. Lately it has been all this talk about lettuce causing explosive diarrhea. Lettuce. The thing we were all told was the safe choice. The clean choice. The choice that made you feel responsible and grown. Turns out the humble salad might be the most dangerous thing in the grocery store.

I do not know about you, but I have never trusted lettuce. It has always seemed a little too proud of itself. Too crisp. Too smug. Too eager to remind you that it is the healthy option. Meanwhile, the rest of the plate is doing the real work. The mashed potatoes are comforting you. The cornbread is cheering you on. The fried chicken is whispering sweet encouragement. And lettuce is over there acting like it deserves a medal.

Now look at it. Causing chaos. Ruining evenings. Sending folks running for the nearest bathroom like it is a footrace. If lettuce had a theme song, it would be a warning siren.

But you know who would never treat us this way? Little Debbie.

Little Debbie has been feeding the South for generations, and she has never betrayed us. Not once. Not a single Swiss Roll has ever turned on its owner. No Nutty Buddy has ever staged a gastrointestinal coup. No Oatmeal Creme Pie has ever sent someone sprinting across a parking lot in distress. Little Debbie shows up, does her job, and leaves you smiling.

She is the dependable friend. The one who never judges you. The one who understands that sometimes life is hard and you need a snack cake shaped like a cloud. She does not pretend to be healthy. She does not pretend to be fancy. She does not pretend to be anything other than what she is. And that honesty counts for something.

Maybe that is the real front porch lesson in all this. We spend so much time trying to do the right thing, eat the right thing, live the right way. We pick the salad because it seems responsible. We choose the lettuce because it feels virtuous. And sometimes the very thing we thought would save us ends up causing the most trouble.

Meanwhile, the simple joys sit quietly on the shelf, waiting for us to remember them. A Little Debbie cake. A cup of coffee. A slow morning. A porch swing. A laugh shared with someone who knows your stories. These things do not pretend to be perfect. They just show up and make life a little sweeter.

So if the news has you worried, here is my advice. Take a breath. Step out on the porch. Let the breeze settle your nerves. And remember that lettuce may betray you, but Little Debbie never will. She is the patron saint of snack cakes, the guardian of the Appalachian digestive system, and the quiet reminder that sometimes the safest choice is the one wrapped in cellophane and smiling back at you.

And if you do decide to eat a salad, well, that is between you and your plumbing. But do not say the porch did not warn you.
